Billions of dollars are being rorted from Medicare each year, by medical practitioners making mistakes or charging for services that didn’t happen.

A joint investigation by The Sydney Morning Herald and ABC has found practices include billing dead people and falsifying patient records to boost profits.

It’s believed the waste represents 30 per cent of Medicare’s annual budget – equating to $8 billion in taxpayer’s money.

Ben Fordham is calling on the federal government to act.

“If you need to overhaul the entire system, do it. If you need to hire more people to catch the crooks, then do that too.

“But Australians won’t sit by while $8 billion a year is wasted on rorts.”

Medicare specialist Dr Margaret Faux told Ben Fordham all types of doctors are involved in the system-wide scandal.

“We do need a royal commission into this sector.”
