Fire Investigation leader offers lithium disposal advice following garbage fires

Article image for Fire Investigation leader offers lithium disposal advice following garbage fires

Inspector Chris Hughes, Team Leader of Fire Investigation at Fire and Rescue NSW, has provided comments on how to safely recycle lithium-ion batteries following several garbage fires.

He highlighted that garbage truck fires happen weekly as a result of improper disposal of lithium batteries.

Mr Hughes advised people to use council recycling centres, as they can store and dispose of batteries correctly.

In the case of lithium-powered electric vehicles, he recommended that the vehicles be charged during the day and outdoors.
