The federal government’s chief productivity adviser has outlined a “fresh agenda” for national economic reform, recommending stamp duty eventually be scrapped.

Productivity Commission Chairman Michael Brennan recognises “it’s a very significant revenue raiser for the states”.

But he tells Alan Jones we need to think of ways to replace stamp duty, in the long term.

“It’s one of the worst taxes. I think most economists would agree it’s one of the most inefficient and destructive taxes because it’s effectively a tax on mobility.

“If you want to move to a place where jobs are more plentiful, or if an older person just wants to downsize…”
