‘Extremely disappointed’: Wagga Wagga mayor declares embattled MP must resign
Pressure is mounting on embattled state Liberal MP Daryl Maguire to step down from parliament.
The state member for Wagga Wagga has already resigned from the Liberal Party after secret recordings played at ICAC revealed his dodgy dealings with a Chinese developer.
Mr Maguire won’t recontest his seat at the next election but is refusing to quit parliament, saying a by-election would be an “unnecessary” cost to taxpayers.
The disgraced MP will remain on the crossbench, pocketing over $13,000 a month until the state election rolls around.
Wagga Wagga Mayor Greg Conkey tells Ben Fordham he’s known Mr Maguire for 30 years and was “extremely disappointed” when the recordings were exposed on Friday.
“I speak for the whole community here, I was extremely disappointed and quite shocked by that tape.
“For somebody who has proudly served this community, to finish his political career in this way… it’s tragic.”
Mr Conkey says the community has lost faith in Mr Maguire and he has no choice but to stand down.
“The very firm opinion of this community is he really has no alternative but to resign as the local member. He just cannot be an effective local member under these circumstances.”
