The trial of suspected drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is underway in New York.

It’s taken years for American law enforcement, working with their Mexican counterparts, to get to the world’s “most wanted drug lord” in a US courthouse.

They were finally successful and the trial is set to capture the world’s attention with ‘El Chapo’ pleading not guilty.

“How do you get a jury that would be confident enough to potentially convict him?” says Ross Greenwood.

One man who will be following the case closely is Malcolm Bieth, author of The Last Narco: Hunting El Chapo, the world’s most wanted drug lord.

Mr Bieth says 51-year-old El Chapo is facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking and money laundering.

And he could be sent to jail for life.

But Mr Bieth sometimes has a gut feeling there may be a twist to this trial…
