Education Minister ‘sees good’ in schools trialing new hours

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell is “all for” the potential change in school hours.

The NSW government will trial an extension of school hours after Premier Dominic Perrottet previously said the 9am to 3pm school day was “set up at a very different time”.

The trial will be across eight schools in the state, in an attempt to cater to working parents.

It will not affect teaching hours but will collaborate with community organisations, local businesses, and sporting clubs to offer a range of activities at school outside of learning hours.

Ms Mitchell told Jim Wilson the trial is to formulate a potential change.

“There are a lot of layers to this … that’s why we want to do the trial, do the different options, see what the cost looks like, and then we can do some modelling beyond,” she said.

“I do think there is a lot of good in this trial.”
