Education Minister addresses major reforms to tackle teacher shortage

Article image for Education Minister addresses major reforms to tackle teacher shortage

The Minister for Education, Jason Clare has discussed major reforms aimed at improving teacher training and addressing the teacher shortage crisis in the country.

Currently, 50 per cent of teaching students do not complete their degree, and 20 per cent leave the profession within the first three years.

Clare explained that one of the reasons behind the shortage lies with teachers feeling unprepared. New reforms aim to embed fundamental skills in university degrees and provide practical experience to better equip teachers for their roles from day one.

“We’ve got awesome teachers doing a fantastic job, but we’ve also agreed to develop a national campaign … to help elevate the profession, celebrate the incredible work that teachers do and the impact that they have on our children.”
