School leavers will soon be required to pass literacy and numeracy tests before enrolling in teaching degrees.

Currently, one in 10 university graduates in education courses fail these basic tests already.

The Coalition’s plan to improve teaching standards follows concerns raised by Acting Education Minister Stuart Robert.

The Minister stated that at least a quarter of maths teachers in Australia are not qualified to teach the subject.

Education Expert Glenn Fahey told Jim Wilson many people are calling for the test to be done at the beginning of the degree, not the end.

“It makes no sense as it currently stands.”
