Drug Lord ‘El Chapo’ found guilty in US trial, but what’s next?

The world’s most infamous cartel boss Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has been found guilty in a US court of drug trafficking.

Jurors in a federal court in New York found Guzman, 61, guilty on all 10 counts.

Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard Donoghue says he expects Guzman to receive life without parole when sentenced on June 25.

Guzman, a major figure in Mexican drug wars that have roiled the country since 2006, was extradited to the US for trial in 2017 after he was arrested in Mexico.

He showed no emotion while the verdict was read.

Author of The Last Narco Malcolm Beth tells Ross Greenwood intelligence is far more developed now to catch criminals.

“There’s so much money in drug trafficking that the cartels were almost always outsmarting the authorities.”

As for what’s next, Malcolm says there’s likely more in store.

“Is this the last we’ve heard from ‘El Chapo’ Guzman? I doubt it.”
