Double demerits scrapped for first time in 25 years as police ‘give motorists a break’

Police have suspended the conventional public holiday double demerits this long weekend for the first time in a quarter century.

NSW Police Minister David Elliott told Jim Wilson given the relatively few cars expected to be on the road amid a lockdown, it made sense to “give motorists a break”.

“For the last 18 months, we have been ruled within an inch of our lives.

“[We’ll do] anything that we can do as a government that will not risk the virus spreading, but will give some sort of relief to the community.”
