Dogs NSW warns puppy farm bill will empower illegal breeders

Mark Levy

Dogs NSW is warning a new puppy farm bill will give rise to unlicensed backyard operators.

Labor has voted in favour of a joint Greens-Animal Justice Party bill, with a series of amendments.

The bill would limit pet shops to only sell rehomed cats and dogs and cap a female dog from having more than two litters in her lifetime.

Dogs NSW President Lyn Brand told Ray Hadley the restriction will affect the registered breeders who follow the rules.

“How can you stop them breeding the numbers that are far going to outweigh well-bred dogs from organisations such as ours?”
