A local council and its rangers are under fire for a shocking act on Australia Day.

A young boy with cerebral palsy and his family had been using an inflatable pool, but after a local complained, rangers stepped in and flipped the pool over.

Statement released from Sutherland Shire Council: “Council’s public safety officers attended Bonna Point yesterday in response to a complaint received about a temporary pool being set up in the public area between the playground and boat ramp.

“In New South Wales, inflatable and portable pools that can hold over 30cm of water are subject to the same strict safety regulation and fencing laws as permanent inground pools.

“For safety reasons, officers respectfully requested the pool be emptied and assisted the family with doing so.

“Our public parks, playgrounds and waterways are much loved spaces and are especially busy on long weekends. It’s important we help to keep everyone safe, which means structures like inflatable or temporary pools are not able to be used in these areas.

“Council staff has also reached out to the family to offer support, with the intention of arranging a safe, accessible swim experience on the mobi-mats at Gunnamatta Bay Baths or at one of our leisure centres.”
