Discovery of 400-year-old Dutch painting in Blue Mountains ‘like winning a lottery’

A 400-year-old Dutch painting worth up to $5 million has been found at a property in the Blue Mountains.

The still life oil painting was located at the National Trust of Australia-managed Woodford Academy during a restoration project.

National Trust Collections manager Rebecca Pinchin told Joe Hildebrand that the painting was part of a collection donated in the 1980s

“While it showed every sign of being authentic … it was felt that it was possibly a copy [at the time].

She says “it really was like winning a lottery” when they found the artist’s signature.
