A landmark decision allowing magistrates not to impose prison terms on minor drug dealers is keeping offenders out of jail.

Fairfax reports judges are choosing suspended sentences, community service orders and intensive correction orders, over full-time jail sentences.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro tells Ray Hadley he will talk to the Premier and Attorney General about the development.

“I think most of us who read that today were shocked to see it at the time.

“As you rightly touched on, we’ve got to be strong on the message.

“And yet one part of I suppose government you would call it, because it is the judiciary, seems to be sending a different message entirely.”
