Damaged container ship finally limps into shore

Macquarie National News

The ship which lost dozens of containers at sea, causing rubbish to wash up on our beaches, is finally making its way to shore.

The Yang Ming has slowly been edging its way into Port Botany, in southern Sydney, days after getting into trouble in rough seas off Port Stephens.

More than 80 containers fell overboard with their contents expected to continue washing up on beaches over the next few weeks.

Nappies, car parts and clocks have already been found north of Newcastle with volunteers helping to clean up the mess.

Damage from the storm is clearly visible aboard the Taiwanese ship. Crushed containers remain toppled over the stern.

Once the vessel has docked, safety officials will board to inspect it and work out how to clear the damaged containers.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Australian Transport Safety Bureau are investigating the incident.
