Daily Telegraph editor denies ‘instruction from above’ in net-zero gear shift

NSW’s most widely-read newspaper The Daily Telegraph has shifted gears to investigate how Australia can achieve a cleaner, greener economy.

Editor Ben English told Ben Fordham it’s “not really” a switch, so much as an increase in coverage of climate issues.

“Perhaps wrongly, our position on the climate issue has been characterised by the views of some of our columnists.

“What’s different about this is that we’ve actually put enormous resources into this; this is the biggest journalistic campaign or project that we’ve done … for a decade.”

Ben asked Mr English if the increased coverage is an instruction that has “come down from above”, amid reported conflict on the issue among the Murdoch family.

“People who have got the Murdoch Derangement Syndrome do believe that, but what it actually emanated from was … our top editors in the country.”
