Cricket captain’s ‘absolutely crazy’ move a ‘slippery slope’ for sport

Ben Fordham

Ben Fordham is warning sport and politics should not mix after it was revealed that Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins lobbied against a major sponsor.

Cummins has revealed he voiced his concerns to the Cricket Australia CEO about a sponsorship agreement with Alinta Energy, one of the country’s largest polluters.

The partnership has since ended, but it’s unclear whether Cummins’ objections played a role in this.

“The idea that the national captain is personally lobbying for his boss to cancel a $40 million sponsorship deal is just absolutely crazy,” Ben said.

“I’m not suggesting these sports stars have to maintain a vow of silence, but be careful what ground you campaign on.”
