Craig Kelly: Peter Dutton ‘very close to having the numbers’

Article image for Craig Kelly: Peter Dutton ‘very close to having the numbers’

Liberal MP Craig Kelly says he believes Peter Dutton is “very close to having the numbers” to secure the Liberal leadership if a spill is called tomorrow.

The Prime Minister has called a party room meeting for 12pm tomorrow, but has demanded to see the signatures of 43 Liberal MPs before allowing it to go ahead.

Mr Kelly says he was hoping a meeting would be called today to resolve the leadership issue, but tells Ben Fordham he believes Mr Dutton is in with a strong chance.

“I believe Peter Dutton is very close (to) having the numbers.  He said he had the numbers this morning.

“I think Peter would make an excellent prime minister of this country.”

Mr Kelly says it’d be “very disappointing” if the party room meeting didn’t go ahead tomorrow.

“The quicker this gets dealt with, the better it is for both the party, and more importantly, the country.”
