Breaking down clusters of migrants in cities could help reduce gang violence, a multicultural affairs expert suggest.

Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, former assistant minister of multicultural affairs, tells Chris Kenny regional settlement needs to be considered.

“Of course it’s important to settle where your friends or people from your village have come from.

“But I think we should be looking more at regional settlement so we can not only move people out of cities but help address workforce shortages in agriculture.”

Senator Fierravanti-Wells says humanitarian entrants into Australia need to get into jobs before falling into welfare.

“The key factors…are the three E’s: English, education and employment.

“[They] are vitally important to successful migration and successful settlement.

“If those young people had a job they wouldn’t be roaming the streets.”
