A confusing proposal to water down rock fishing safety laws in NSW will be amended, in what’s been described as a victory for common sense.

Labor had previously endorsed a private member’s bill by the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party that appeared to propose people rock fishing in dangerous spots could wear a wetsuit instead of a life jacket.

Ray Hadley had blasted it the “dumbest idea ever seen in the history of NSW Parliamentā€.

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib admitted it created unnecessary confusion.

Labor will seek amendments to the bill.

“Ultimately the issue about the lifejacket and wetsuits … the unintended consequences that it did create a sense of confusion and potentially didn’t work in the interest or the spirit of the bill, which is safety,” Mr Dib told Ray Hadley.
