Concerns about strata powers as elderly couple are forced from home

Questions are being raised about the power of strata committees in NSW after the traumatic experience of an elderly Earlwood couple.

Nitsa and Spiros Tzavellas, aged 78 and 81 are to soon be forced from their home and are facing bankruptcy for not being able to afford new windows voted on by their strata committee.

Financial Counselling Australia’s Lauren Levin joined Jim Wilson on Drive to address the concern about the undue influence of strata committees on people’s lives.

“There are problems with the legislation … it’s just too easy to have a forced bankruptcy when the strata organisation wants to raise a levy or a debt is unpaid,” she said.

“We need law reform, this is happening all around Australia.”
