Champion Aussie runner Ollie Hoare has paid tribute to his late grandfather, Fred, a WWII veteran.

Hoare crossed the line in a Commonwealth Games record time of 3:30.13 to win gold in the 1500m race.

He told Ben Fordham his grandfather was a big inspiration to him.

“I know he was looking down, having a laugh and really enjoying the result.”

She told Ben she harboured hopes he would become a swimmer.
