After a week of leadership chaos, support for the Coalition has collapsed in the latest opinion poll.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison faces a tough task to get the Coalition back on track for an election victory.

The first Newspoll since the chaotic change to the Liberal leadership shows Labor’s primary vote now stands at 41 per cent, the Coalition is at 33 per cent.

The poll also has Bill Shorten ahead of Scott Morrison as preferred Prime Minister.

It’s the first time since February 2015 the Labor leader has been preferred PM.

The Australian’s poll has Labor ahead 56 to 44 per cent, two-party preferred.

However, a separate ReachTel poll reveals a different result, with Mr Morrison ahead just days after taking over from Malcolm Turnbull.

The Prime Minister will try to move on from the polls by travelling to drought-affected parts of Queensland later this morning.
