Chris Smith tears into France’s ‘childish’ reaction to scrapped submarine deal

France is discouraging other European nations from negotiating a new free trade agreement with Australia in the wake of our withdrawal from a $90 billion submarine deal.

Chris Smith called out the “childish” response, which has included the recalling of French Ambassadors in Australia and the US, cancelling a celebration of French-American relations, and the “sabotage” of free trade negotiations.

The “C-grade” submarines they were offering under the original deal were overpriced and outdated, he argued.

“France’s response to the scrapped diesel submarine deal has been one of the most over-the-top acts of whinging I think I’ve ever seen.

“They’re acting like spoiled brats in the playground, not a leading Western democracy.”
