Celebrating the ‘unnoticed’ workers within our corrections system

Correctional staff across Australia who dedicate their lives to keeping the community safe are being celebrated on National Corrections Day.

Minister for Corrections Anthony Roberts tells Mark Levy the field of corrections is one of the most challenging across the globe but Australia’s staff and programs are some of the world’s best.

“We’ve moved on from the days of just locking people up and throwing away the key and doing nothing for them while they are in our custody.

“We have programs now… we do our very best to make them better people so when they leave they have a better opportunity to be productive members and law-abiding members of our community.

“It’s a difficult job, it’s a hard job, and it’s a job that goes very much unnoticed but it’s a critical job for our society.”
