Byron Shire Council is looking at making it illegal to surf without a leg rope, following previous reports of serious injuries caused by untethered boards.

Former pro surfer, Matt Cassidy, was almost killed in an accident where another surfer dropped in on him and their leg rope snapped and severed Matt’s artery.

Bruce Hopkins, a Bondi Lifeguard, told Deborah Knight it would be “pretty hard” to enforce these rules and being able to look at who’s not wearing leg ropes would be “very difficult”.

“The surf etiquette is there. It’s on a surfboard-looking sign that’s on the promenade,” said Bruce.
