Whyalla was a practically a ghost town, facing an uncertain future until a British billionaire industrialist unveiled his grand plans for investment.

GFG Executive Chairman Sanjeev Gupta announced the grand scale steel plant, a $600-million expansion of Whyalla’s existing steel mill to lift annual production to 1.8 million tonnes.

He says it could become one of the world’s largest steel production facilities.

It’s believed the town’s current population of 22,000 could boom to 80,000.

At the announcement, Mr Gupta was joined by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and SA Premier Steven Marshall.

He tells Ross Greenwood Australia has “a very willing, accepting political system, despite all the criticism.”

“Today is a good example. We had the Prime Minister, we had the leader of the Opposition, we had the Premier and we had the leader of the State Opposition.

“In the history of Australia, have you had any occasion like what we had in Whyalla today?

“Not fighting… but actually supporting one cause. Now that doesn’t happen anywhere in the world.”
