Australia has bowled England for just 147 runs on the opening day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Former Test cricketer Matthew Hayden told Jim Wilson there was “plenty of juice” in the “typical Gabba green-top” for the Australian bowlers.

“I was rubbing shoulders this morning with a few of the boys before the start of play, and all of them … [said] ‘you know what, this is a great toss to lose’.”

Pat Cummins has had a dream first outing as Test captain, with Hayden commending the “boy from the bush” on his leadership.

“You get that flush of Australian heritage, and I think that’s a big part of Pat’s leadership – he’s a very, very nice bloke.”

Mitchell Starc bowled Rory Burns with the first ball of the match, and also dismissed Jos Buttler.

Former fast bowler Ryan Harris told Mark Levy Starc well and truly proved his “unwarranted” critics wrong.

“I’ve spoken to a few ex-players as well that have been disappointed with the criticisms.

“He didn’t have a great summer last summer, we know that, but … I thought he bowled really well in that World Cup.”
