‘Biometric profile ‘ – The emerging technology you should be concerned about
Michael McLaren has warned Australians should be questioning the increase in surveillance, as one eftpos operator announces plans to ditch the four-digit pin for your face.
He says no one has asked about where the data is going, where they’ve been manufactured, and if they can be hacked
“[These] are all questions we and the authorities seem to be putting off for another day. Instead, under the non-controversial guise of safety, we’re installing these things like it’s going out of fashion, but with little scrutiny and few guidelines,” he said.
His concerns come after several high-profile instances of new forms of surveillance, including facial recognition cameras at the two big supermarkets.
“But is yet another layer of image-capturing technology (and one that doesn’t just scan the faces of bad guys, but of all customers) really what we need?” he questioned.
