Balmain Leagues acquisition a ‘kick in the teeth’ for footy fans and locals alike

The Wests Tigers may never regain territory in their Balmain birthplace due to a NSW government land acquisition.

The derelict former Balmain Leagues Club site on Victoria Road, Rozelle is set to be acquired by the government under the Just Terms Act for construction of the Western Harbour Tunnel.

Wests Ashfield CEO Simon Cook told Jim Wilson the acquisition and lack of communication from government is a “kick in the teeth” for Tigers fans and locals alike, who had been promised a brand new club.

“The poor residents there have been sitting with an eyesore for the last 10 years … there’s now going to be seven years of digging around them and three years of construction.

“It’ll be another decade before we’re able to put a club back there.”
