An aviation consultant says pilots who were forced to issue a mayday call during a Qantas flight from Auckland to Sydney, handled the situation perfectly.

Flight QF144 ran into engine trouble with about an hour left in the trip across the Tasman.

It landed without incident.

Aviation Consultant Dr Peter Bates told Deborah Knight the crew onboard are all trained for these type of scenarios.

“Yesterday was a classic example of how Australian aviation comes together and works extremely well.”
