Australian entrepreneur and businessman, Dick Smith, has been named Australian Father of the Year 2018.

The award was announced today by the Australian Father’s Day Council and The Shepherd Centre, a charity for children with hearing impairments.

Smith has founded companies like the iconic Dick Smith Electronics, the Australian Geographic magazine, and the Dick Smith Food Foundation, which has given over $10 million dollars to more than 400 charitable organisations.

Despite the long list of achievements and accolades, including being named Australian of the Year in 1986, Smith says his two daughters and marriage of 50 years next March are his greatest accomplishments.

“One of the things my dad and my mum did for me, they let me be an individual and never forced me to go to uni or do something that I wouldn’t be capable of. And we did our best to do that with our girls,” Dick tells Chris Smith.

“The best thing I can suggest to any father is we always had breakfast and dinner until we left home, always with our dad and mum, and that was really fantastic.

“If any parent can do that, it’s important,” Dick tells Chris.
