Australian Meat Industry hits out at potential billion-dollar cut to producers
China has announced plans to restrict beef imports, slapping a 55% tariff on over-quota imports, which is expected to have a direct impact on Australian farmers and exporters.
The CEO of the Australian Meat Industry Council, Tim Ryan told 2GB Summer Drive, “Certainly not the news I wanted to welcome 2026 with.”
“We’ll lose about a third of our beef export market access that will have to get reallocated to alternative destinations as a result of this, and that is about $1 billion worth of trade that will get redirected,” he continued.
