Aussie couples asked to ‘bare all’ for revealing documentary series

A casting call has been put out for less-than-happy couples willing to take part in a rare and confronting TV documentary series.

Executive Producer of Paramount+ series Couples Therapy Australia Penny McWhirter told Deborah Knight couples who apply will gain months of real relationship counselling.

The non-invasive “purely observational” production is filmed with hidden cameras, and sessions are never disrupted by producers.

“It is a big ask, to ask couples to bare all.

“The top issues – communication, loss of connection, infidelity and trust – all those things come tumbling out.”

Ms McWhirter welcomed the gradual destigmatisation of couples therapy in recent years, especially among “more open” younger people.

“They’re going … ‘I want to know how to sort it out earlier’, ‘I don’t want to end up … like my parents’.

“Most people wait six years … before they actually reach out – that’s a long time to be unhappy.”
