New data has revealed how many of us are taking up extra work to pay our bills.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has found that the number of Australians taking up multiple jobs has increased slightly over a five year period.

In 2015-2016, close to two million employees held more than one job.

That’s around 15 per cent of the working population.

Program director for labour statistics at the ABS Bjorn Jarvis joins John Stanley to break down the results.

“We know that on average about 84 per cent of what people earn will be in the primary job and about 16 per cent in those second and more jobs,” he says.

Mr Jarvis reveals New South Wales and South Australia are the states with the lowest rates of multiple job taking.

The Northern Territory boasts the highest rate.
