Alleged drug driver crashes police road safety launch

A bizarre set of circumstances has unfolded as police were promoting their Easter long weekend safety message today.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn and Assistant Police Commissioner Michael Corboy gathered on the side of the Princes Highway in Ulladulla to announce a crackdown on repeat driving offenders.

At the same time, local police were conducting routine breath tests and pulled a female red p-plate driver over.

Macquarie Radio’s state political reporter Tamara Wearne was there and tells Ben Fordham what happened next.

“When the press conference wound up we noticed her car was still sitting on the side of the road and both herself and her two passengers were no longer around,” Tamara says.

“The young woman had allegedly tested positive to driving with cannabis in her system.

“They were standing there urging drivers to stay away from drugs and alcohol, and slow down to be safe… and this is unfolding right behind us.”
