Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese has had a spray at Peter Dutton following comments he made about gang violence on Chris Kenny’s show.

Mr Albanese tells Chris Kenny he thinks Mr Dutton’s comments on Melbourne’s African gangs were “over the top”.

“The idea Victorians are not going out to restaurants…that’s a very damaging thing to say about Melbourne.

“My concern in Peter Dutton’s comments will be a distraction from what’s needed to deal with a very real issue.”

Mr Albanese does admit there is a problem with youth gang violence in Melbourne.

“Of course there’s an issue. There’s no question there’s an issue.

“The fact is people from different African communities are overrepresented when it comes to offences from young people.

“At the same time, it needs to be acknowledged overall crime rates have fallen in the last year in Melbourne for the first time in a long while.”
