Agriculture Minister responds to calls for tightened foot and mouth biosecurity

Clinton Maynard

Concern continues to grow about the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Indonesian livestock.

Many members of the public are calling for an increase in biosecurity measures at airports.

Federal Minister for Agriculture Murray Watt has joined Jim Wilson on Drive to respond to the calls for tightened border security.

“Last week we introduced a range of new measures,” he said.

“I’m all for doing more and I’ve asked my department for advice.

“If there’s anything else we can do at all to remove that risk or reduce that risk I’m happy to do it.”

When asked if he will implement things like foot baths at the border, Mr Watt responded:

“The advice I’ve had from to-date from our biosecurity experts is that they’re not that effective … for a couple of reasons.

“If biosecurity experts reckon something will work, then I’m up for it.”
