Prime Minister announces NSW floods a national emergency
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has declared the NSW floods disaster a national emergency on a visit to the stricken region.
The decision to declare the floods a national emergency means more Commonwealth resources will be sent to the area including extra help from Defence for communities.
“There is no flood event that has occurred in this part of Australia, like this, in anyone’s living or recorded memory and that Is a profound statement.”
There will be additional disaster payments for flood-affected victims and extra payments for worst-affected areas.
$10 Million will be committed to children’s mental health also.
Lismore local Tony Bazzana is calling for help in flood recovery.
He told Jim Wilson, “people need the money in their hands now”.
“Any assistance is greatly appreciated at this time.”

Federal Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman told Jim Wilson flooding in Windsor and Hawkesbury has “gone down a bit”.
“There is still water everywhere.”

Hundreds of troops are on standby as Sydney prepares to tackle its flood recovery.
The head of ADF Recovery Mission in Lismore, Brigadier Robert Lording, told Ben Fordham there is about 250 personnel already in Sydney.
“I know it’s been pretty severe … but we haven’t received a direct request from NSW SES to step those people out the door yet but there are ready to go when we get that call.”
There are 1800 ADF personnel on the ground in northern NSW, with up to 4000 expected by the end of the week.
