Acland open-cut coal mine decision due tomorrow

Article image for Acland open-cut coal mine decision due tomorrow

Alan Jones speaks with Doctor Tanya Plant and Professor Ross Fitzgerald about the New Acland open-cut coal mine.

The New Hope Group is trying to progress its approvals for the New Acland stage three expansion, while extending the life of its current mining operations.

The land court has overwhelmingly recommended against the mine, but that judgement will be tested tomorrow when the Department of Environment and Science decides on New Acland’s stage three environmental authority.

Dr Plant lives right next to this mine with her family and tells Alan it must be refused.

“All the evidence is on our side… as well as the mine being entirely on the best agricultural land that the government itself has mapped that should be protected.

“So really all the things should mean it should be refused.”
