Abortion bill chaos: Liberal MP insists plan to defect to crossbench isn’t grandstanding

A Liberal MP who is threatening to move to the crossbench over a controversial abortion bill is fighting accusations he’s simply grandstanding.

MPs Kevin Conolly and Tanya Davies have both signalled they’re prepared to take the Coalition into minority government if crucial amendments aren’t made to the abortion legislation.

Although some have accused the pair of grandstanding, Mr Conolly tells Steve Price he’s perfectly serious.

“I’ve been a member of the Liberal Party for 28 years… it’s a big step for me to even consider talking about something like this.

“We have to bring [the bill] back to something that the community can accept.”
