‘A huge problem’: Major study reveals Australian child mistreatment statistics

Deborah Knight

A major new study, conducted by Queensland University of Technology researchers, has found 62 per cent of Australians aged over 16 have experienced childhood abuse or neglect.

Researchers say their five-year investigation could result in better health and justice outcomes for all Australians, with a major policy shift.

Chief Investigator, Professor Daryl Higgins, says child abuse is something Australians are not used to talking about and that is “part of the problem”.

“We need join up our prevention efforts across all forms of child abuse and take a coordinated national approach,” Professor Higgins told Deborah Knight.

“We could be providing greater support.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please contact Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 or Lifeline 13 11 14.
