A horrific road toll has prompted a review into the sentencing of repeat driving offenders.

Attorney General Mark Speakman says the way persistent dangerous drivers are punished is now being assessed.

He’s asked the Sentencing Council to assess punishments given to repeat traffic offenders who pose an ongoing risk to the community.

He tells Ben Fordham “the road toll last year was unacceptable”.

“The suffering that occurred over the Christmas break was just horrendous.”

The Attorney General says he’ll “look at all the evidence” and do what it takes to “improve road safety and cut the road toll”.
