Thousands of jobs at risk as iconic brand prepares to close

Deborah Knight

Giant retailer Toys ‘R’ Us is set to close, putting 2,700 Australian jobs in jeopardy.

US CEO of Toys R Us Dave Brandon has told employees it will sell or close all its American stores and a number of other countries will have their operations liquidated.

President of the Australian Toy Association Andrew Skinner tells Ross Greenwood how it will impact Australian vendors.

“It definitely has a significant impact on the industry overall.

“For a lot of vendors… Toys ‘R’ Us is their largest retailer because Kmart, Target and Big W are a bit more selective about who they trade with.

“Many of the distributors [and] suppliers will have accounts with Toys ‘R’ Us which they’d be concerned about and business moving forward as well.”
