More than one million Australians have unknowingly become pay as you go (PAYG) taxpayers.

But the Australian Taxation Office isn’t telling people why this is happening.

Ross Greenwood speaks with Inspector-General of Taxation Ali Noroozi to find out more.

“What we’ve discovered is that the taxpayers are not well-informed about how this system works.

“It’s not that the tax office isn’t telling them, they do receive a welcome letter, but the information the tax office provides is quite general in nature.

“People don’t understand what their obligations are.”
