“Cowardly” – The alleged assault that sparked a state wide stoppage of correctional officers
Correctional officers across the state have walked off the job today after an inmate allegedly assaulted a corrections officer and then was given bail.
The General Secretary of the Public Service Association Stewart Little has told Mark Levy the alleged assault resulted in a hospitalisation and surgery after the officer suffered serious injuries.
“This is a serious inmate who, in our view, I think we need to look at why he was even at that facility … my view is that he should have been at a maximum security facility,” he said.
“It’s a very volatile situation, Mark; the jails are full, half the population are remands, and this is what happens when these characters come in,” he added.
