As Australia Day draws close, Michael McLaren has reflected on the current state of Australia.

He says those who want the date changed will still find issues with Australia Day, and he’s questioned how lucky Australia really is.

“We used to subscribe to this idea that in Australia, if you had a go, you’d get ahead, but now we have close to 50 per cent of the population relying on the state for their main source of income,” he said.

I’d urge those tempted to once again whip out the old lines about this being the best country in the world … to at least consider whether we can so naturally lay claim to such a title any more,” he added.
