The Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism in Australia has called out the actions of a lone pro-Palestine protester who disrupted a memorial site this afternoon.

Jillian Segal says she was laying flowers at the site in Bondi Pavilion when she saw a woman wearing a keffiyah being asked to leave the area.

“And if she was yelling … ‘zionist pigs’ or whatever it was … we have to stop that because those kinds of sentiments verbalised in that angry, nasty way … lead to hateful actions,” she told Michael McLaren.

“That is not the Australian way, we don’t need to behave like that,” she added.

She also says it’s easy to say more should have been done, but acknowledged some of the recommendations from her report are difficult to implement.

“We have had anti-Semitism almost embedded now for many years, and that’s part of our culture … it’s not the accepted part of our culture, but there are parts of the community that think in that way,” she said.
