Australian war hero Keith Payne, a Victoria Cross (VC) recipient, spoke with Ray following the posthumous awarding of a VC to Private Richard Norden.

Payne had frequently discussed with Ray the efforts to recognise Norden’s bravery in the Vietnam War.

Norden received the honour on Monday for his extraordinary “acts of gallantry” when he charged into enemy fire on May 14, 1968, during the Battle of Fire Support Base Coral.
