Centenarian veteran honoured at Kokoda memorial walkway

Michael McLaren

Reg Chard, who braved the Kokoda Track at 18, has celebrated his 100th birthday with fellow war heroes at a memorable event in Concord.

Kokoda veteran Bruce Robertson also marked his 103rd while war widow Penny Dickinson celebrated her 100th. Chard, reminiscing about the “living hell” of Kokoda, now dedicates his time to educating younger generations about the war through guided tours at the memorial walkway.

“It doesn’t feel different, but it’s so unusual to reach that figure. I’m very fortunate,” Reg expressed on his 100th milestone.
